Haunted Eyes

Quietly seated on a chair
Her head bowed low
Weighted down with care
Hoping no one would know.

The child’s name is called
She slowly lifts her head
“ Yes, Ma’am,” she drawled
Her eyes were set ahead.

I saw pain that was there
Written on her sweet face
There was the haunted stare
Her need for some space

Tears welled up inside
Seeing this child’s pain
Her innocence had died
What did that man gain?

Can you forget the eyes
Haunted eyes of a child
Forget the father’s lies
How this child was reviled?

One day there’ll be a place
Where no child will cry
No tears on a sweet face
Or those haunted eyes.
