What is my Purpose?

When I feel I am losing my usefulness,
and I sense the world passing me by,
I will climb up the trail to the mountain top -
above the clouds  high in the sky.

In a pasture I passed on my way up the trail,
an old horse stood staring at me.
Had he also outlived his usefulness?
Just what would  his destiny be?

I climbed the lofty mountain peak,
as high as I ever would go.
I  sensed the near presence of God by my side,
as I looked at the field down below.

I saw the same horse, who was still in the field.
Could I say we are  two of a  kind?
Do we still seek a meaningful purpose in life?
if so, is it too late to find?

Then from a celestial aura of peace,
came a vision I barely could see.
A beckoning hand I then saw reaching out;
and a voice I heard speaking to me.

“All creatures are given a purpose in life,
and I have provided a balance.
You will find there are many more skillful than you
and others who have lesser talents.

“Your purpose is greater than fretting about
the many things you cannot do.
You should always take efforts to make the best use
of  the tools I  have given to you.”

As I walked by the pasture again, the old horse
appeared to be smiling at me.
“Old timer,” I said, “your life purpose is clear.
It’s a greeter you’re now meant to be.”

Now that is one thing I’m still able to do
I can greet those I meet with a smile,
and when all who were greeted will smile back at me,
I’ll acknowledge my life is worthwhile.
