What is This Thing Called Love?
‘Tis often asked, “Just what is love?”
Many answers the question will bring.
A certain response might come from one,,
from another, a quite different thing.
A little child says, “I love ice cream,
a man claims a love for his car.
When we try to explain these different loves,
we might miss the meaning by far.
The Greeks have a number of meanings for love.
Eros is the one most appealing
to those who vow they are in love.
It produces an erotic feeling.
Then there is the love they call Phillia-
the love that one has for a brother.
It’s the love that is felt by people who share
lasting friendships, each one for the other.
Aga’pe is the encompassing love,
that God has for mankind.
Aga’pe is an unselfish love,
in which all loves are combined.
It’s the love that binds a man and his wife
after decades of storms they will weather,
culminating in an enduring love,
still glowing by being together.
