What Makes Our Lives Worthwhile?
I gazed at my helpmate of forty six years-
My wife, companion and friend.
And I thanked God that through these years
Together we always have been.
We’ve trod those paths that the ancients trod
Viewed scars of wartime sites.
We’ve survived the best and the worst of times.
Experienced both darkness and light.
We planted the seeds of our own family tree
Its branches now spread far and wide
Nourished and fed with the values of life
And with faith has been tested and tried.
There are many more years that behind us we’ve left
Than the number that for us remain
But each passing day is a new one to live
There is still much to learn and to gain
Tis clearer, though, with each new dawn
And the passage of every mile
It’s not our gains, but what we give
Makes the living more worthwhile.
