Well Planned Life

A well planned life was not for me,
for it was never meant to be.
No plans could guide me through a life
That never was too orderly.

My life has not gone as was planned
from the day that I was born.
There’s been a mix of happy scenes,
with roses and with thorns.

One drastic change to my life came
December,“Forty One”
I was only eighteen years of age,
My college years not done.

When America entered World War Two,
I was chomping at the bit.
I wanted to jump into the fray,
To be a part of it.

So after the war and out of the Corps,
I settled down to teach
But then the long arm of the Corps
For me once more did reach.

So I headed for Korea, where
Marines were called to fight
Invading communist forces
That came by dark of night.

From land based fields and carrier decks
We repelled the enemy hordes
Who had crossed the Yalu River, where
From China they had poured.

After the Korean War had ceased,
I continued in education
More fearful now for our children’s fate
And the plight of our great nation.

I’m now retired, but the fight goes on
as battle still rages within
Against internal enemies, who
would prefer that we lose, not win.
