The Breakdown of a Nation
The sun is rising slowly in the east,
its healing rays protection from the gloom.
But deep within my heart a chill appears,
a premonition of impending doom.
We see foundations molded by the strength
of moral fiber from another day.
The mettle of this fiber hard as steel,
erodes now to consistency of clay.
The cracks are growing wider in our wall.
Our solidarity is fading fast.
Can we regain the honor, pride and trust,
the hope our founders gave us in the past?
What’s happened to this great democracy,
the strongest nation that the world has known?
Among the seeds of freedom planted deep,
perhaps some seeds of weaknesses were sown.
We were united by a common goal,
to be free men with equal rights for all.
Some wise men said, “United we will stand.”
They also said, “Divided we will fall.”
As politicians lust and strive for power,
like Nero in the fires of ancient Rome,
they blatently ignore the peoples’ will
and fiddle while their own fires rage at home.
By selfish goals they stain our nation’s soul.
Malevolence and greed show in their eyes.
They are content to sit and “watch Rome burn”
and revel in our country’s slow demise.
